Ray Pelletier Sr. was my friend for more than 20 years. We met at twilight on a golf course in the Bahamas. He was part of my group. Ray was trying to convince South American investors to put some money in a timesharing project I worked for.
Ray was a dreamer, who took action. He had some great ideas, and the courage to transform a concept into a plan of action.
I last saw him alive on a Friday evening at a private party celebrating the release of his new book. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was going into a hospital on Monday for a hernia operation.
I got the call on Friday. I was in my car. In a parking lot outside a grocery, a couple of miles north of Miami Lakes, FL. It was his ex-wife. She said, simply, “Ray didn’t make it.”
I didn’t get to say goodbye. I didn’t get to tell him how much he had helped me over the years. I didn’t get to reflect on the promotions we did or the speaking engagements he had. It was over.
But Ray lives on, in the mind of many people, because of personal interpretation of an annual, global, event. The beginning of a new year.
Ray often said to me as a year was about to end, that people think they only have one day a year to start over. If they believe, as I do, that everyday is January 1st, they can start over everyday, leaving failure in the past, while being focused on the future.
